Are You Feeling Lucky? (ER-46)
This integrated mathematics and societies and cultures class explored why if the casino always wins, people continue to gamble? Other questions students explored included: Are government-sponsored lotteries good for everyone? Why are more and more states legalizing gambling? Is there a best way to play roulette, blackjack, and craps? What is gambling addiction? Students wrestled with these questions and many more as this class examined the mathematics of gambling and considered the implications for themselves, and their communities. In class, students gambles, discussed gambling issues with people who have first hang knowledge of gambling, and considered whether or not gambling is a healthy life choice. Students also considered what other risks they take in their lives and how mathematics of chance can better inform which risks students choose to take and which they choose to avoid.
