New Student Orientation
Learning Through Experience
Eagle Rock’s new student orientation offers a thoughtful, step-by-step introduction designed to help every student feel grounded, supported, and ready to thrive.
The experience begins with a week-long pre-trimester orientation at a remote site where the focus is on building community, establishing healthy routines, wellness practices, and support systems. From there, students move into a 2-day house retreat where they settle into their new home at Eagle Rock and begin fostering strong relationships with their housemates and supporting adults.
As the trimester begins, students enroll in a morning and afternoon class with options for clubs and activities in the late afternoon and evening. In the first five weeks, new students take a required afternoon class called Homespace. Homespace offers an introduction to Eagle Rock, where students gain essential skills in areas such as academics, social-emotional learning, and conflict resolution. They also practice outdoor skills on the weekends to prepare for their summer backpacking trip.
Mid-trimester in the fall and winter, students participate in “Wellness Week,” which includes a 3–5 day trip that blends outdoor adventure with reflection and personal growth. With activities ranging from hiking, backpacking, biking, climbing, and occasionally winter sports. Throughout this process, outdoor education is woven into the experience as a supportive, skill-building journey that continues across the year.
New students' first year at Eagle Rock culminates in a tech-free 21-day summer backpacking expedition in Colorado, where students apply their skills in a meaningful and rewarding setting.
This model provides a strong foundation for academic achievement, personal development, and lifelong connection—ensuring students are prepared, confident, and fully supported on their Eagle Rock journey.
