Beyond One Classroom: How Eagle Rock Prepares Future Teachers Through Licensure Learning Visits

Learning to teach isn't something that happens in a single classroom.

At Eagle Rock, future educators spend an entire year immersed in teaching, mentorship, and reflection through our Teacher Licensure Program. They co-teach alongside experienced educators, build relationships with students in our competency-based learning environment, and gradually develop their own identity as teachers.

But part of becoming an effective educator also means stepping beyond your own campus.

That's why Eagle Rock's Teacher Licensure Program includes Learning Visits, opportunities for licensure candidates to observe classrooms and school communities across Colorado while exploring different approaches to teaching and learning.

Learning From a Variety of Schools

Each Learning Visit is intentionally designed around a different educational focus.

Throughout the year, candidates visit public, charter, and independent schools, observing everything from competency-based instruction and experiential learning to classroom culture and student engagement. Partner schools have included RiseUp Community School in Denver, William Smith High School in Aurora, Mapleton Early Career Prep School in Thornton, Polaris Expeditionary Learning School in Fort Collins, Compass Academy in Denver, Watershed School in Boulder, and Estes Park High School.

Rather than searching for a single "right" way to teach, candidates are encouraged to notice how different schools approach similar challenges.

How do teachers create inclusive classrooms? What strategies encourage student engagement? How does the physical environment influence learning? How are relationships built throughout the school day?

These observations become the foundation for meaningful conversations with teachers, school leaders, and fellow licensure candidates.

Preparing Teachers Through Reflection

The Learning Visits are closely connected to Eagle Rock's licensure curriculum.

Early in the year, candidates focus on questions of identity, belonging, and what it means to become an educator. As their experience grows, the visits shift toward instructional practice, examining lesson design, differentiation, assessment, classroom management, and student learning.

Before each visit, candidates explore the school's educational approach through readings and discussion. During the visit, they practice low-inference observation, carefully documenting what they see without immediately drawing conclusions. Afterwards, they reflect together on what they learned and how those insights connect to their own teaching.

The goal isn't simply to collect new ideas. It's to become more thoughtful, adaptable educators.

Expanding What Teaching Can Look Like

For many candidates, the visits reinforce an important realization: great teaching can take many different forms.

Every school has its own culture, priorities, and community. Seeing those differences firsthand encourages future teachers to think critically about their own practice while remaining open to new perspectives.

Sometimes a visit validates something they've already experienced at Eagle Rock. Other times it challenges assumptions or introduces an approach they hadn't considered before. Both experiences are valuable.

By exploring a variety of educational settings, candidates develop a broader understanding of how learning happens and how they can best support students in different environments.

A Different Path Into Teaching

Eagle Rock's Teacher Licensure Program offers an alternative pathway for individuals who did not complete teacher preparation during their undergraduate studies.

As part of the school's year-long Fellowship Program, licensure candidates teach full time while participating in weekly seminars that blend educational philosophy, pedagogy, and classroom practice. The program intentionally remains small, allowing candidates to receive individualized coaching, mentorship, and meaningful classroom experience.

Eagle Rock also works to reduce barriers to entering the profession by covering licensure fees, required testing, housing, meals, and other program costs. These supports make it possible for more aspiring educators to pursue teaching while gaining hands-on experience in a residential, competency-based school.
