Expanding Horizons: Licensure Learning Visits Connect Educators Across Colorado

At Eagle Rock School, we’re committed to preparing educators who are not only ready to teach but ready to transform education. Through our Alternative Licensure Program, fellows earn their Colorado teaching licenses while working full-time on our campus, immersed in a supportive and progressive learning community. Rooted in student-centered pedagogy and equity, this program empowers educators to put theory into practice from day one. This year, our fellows visited schools across the state—including William Smith High School in Aurora, Rise Up Community School in Denver, Mapleton Early Career Prep in Thornton, Watershed High School in Boulder, and Estes Park High School.

One of the key people helping shape this vision is Hanna Rose, our Professional Development Associate and Lodgepole Houseparent. Hanna brings deep experience in progressive education and a passion for cultivating learning spaces where all students feel seen and valued. From teaching in rural Nepal to building a middle school in Nashville, her journey has been guided by a belief in education as a tool for social change. At Eagle Rock, she leads the Alternative Licensure Program and curates the Licensure Learning Visits – carefully crafted experiences that invite fellows into Colorado classrooms beyond our campus.

These visits are designed to broaden perspectives, inspire innovation, and deepen our fellows’ understanding of what it means to teach inclusively in today’s classrooms.

Learning Through Observation: Expanding Practice, Deepening Insight

Every classroom tells a story. And through the Licensure Learning Visits, our fellows get to listen in on many. By stepping into diverse school environments, from large urban public high schools to smaller alternative campuses, fellows have the chance to observe a wide range of instructional practices, classroom cultures, and educational philosophies.

These visits are structured with intention. Fellows reflect beforehand on key focus areas aligned with Colorado’s Teacher Quality Standards – things like inclusive teaching, classroom management, or student engagement. During the visit, they observe with these goals in mind, connect with teachers and school leaders, and afterward, participate in debrief sessions that ground their learning in real-world application.

What we’ve found is that these experiences are transformative. Fellows leave not only with new strategies and insights but with a broader, more nuanced understanding of the challenges and possibilities within our education system. They begin to ask deeper questions about equity, reflect on how their identities shape their teaching, and expand their definition of what a “successful” classroom looks like.

Building Bridges: Community, Collaboration, and Shared Purpose

Another powerful outcome of the Licensure Learning Visits is the community they help build. Teaching is a complex and often isolating profession, but when we connect across schools and contexts, something shifts. We remember that we’re not alone in this work.

Each visit creates space for fellows to meet educators who are also committed to reimagining school. They share ideas, swap stories, and learn from one another’s experiences. These moments of connection, whether in classroom circles or one-on-one conversations, remind us of our shared purpose: to create learning environments where all students can thrive.

Beyond the individual benefits, these partnerships strengthen Eagle Rock’s connections with schools across the state. We’re grateful for the educators who open their classrooms and their hearts to our licensure candidates, and we’re excited to continue building a network rooted in trust, curiosity, and collective growth.

Transforming Education: A Vision for a More Just Future

At its core, our Licensure Learning Visits are about transformation – of teachers, of schools, and of education itself. By exposing our fellows to a range of learning environments and pedagogical models, we’re helping them understand that there’s no one “right” way to teach. Instead, we encourage them to cultivate inclusive practices that are responsive to their students’ identities, needs, and strengths.

These visits also push us to think critically about the systems we work within. Fellows witness firsthand how traditional models of education have underserved many students, particularly those from historically marginalized communities. This awareness fuels a deeper commitment to justice, empathy, and student-centered learning.

As we expand the number of school visits each year, we’re not just checking a box; we’re reshaping what teacher preparation can look like. Our goal is to support educators who are curious, reflective, and ready to carry forward the values of equity and community into every classroom they enter.

Licensure Learning Visits are just one part of our Alternative Licensure Program – but they’re a meaningful one. These experiences remind us that the best teachers are lifelong learners, and that real growth happens when we step outside our comfort zones and into new conversations. We’re proud of our fellows, inspired by our partner schools, and excited for what’s ahead as we continue learning together.

Want to learn more or partner with us? We’d love to hear from you. Let’s keep reimagining education: one visit, one connection, one courageous teacher at a time.
