Exploring the Great Outdoors: Eagle Rock's Commitment to Outdoor Education
Located in some of the most pristine natural landscapes of Colorado, Eagle Rock School has long been dedicated to providing students with transformative outdoor education experiences.
Led by Jordan Cerna, the Outdoor Education Program Manager, and Fox Stoddard, the Outdoor Education Course Manager, Eagle Rock offers students the opportunity to connect with nature, build resilience, and discover new passions.
Empowering Exploration: Tailored Outdoor Experiences
At Eagle Rock, outdoor education goes beyond traditional classroom settings. Jordan and Fox leverage our physical resources to provide students with a diverse array of outdoor activities. From rock climbing in the gym to natural rock climbing on-site and mountain biking adventures, youth have the opportunity to explore their interests and find the activities that ignite their passion for the outdoors.
A cornerstone of Eagle Rock's outdoor education program is the backpacking experience students undertake during their first trimester. Designed to challenge the young adults and foster trust and relationships, this inaugural wilderness backpacking experience is often a transformative journey for many students. Moreover, through the Student Wilderness Instructor Program, veteran students have the opportunity to become apprentice field instructors, guiding their peers through the wilderness and sharing their knowledge and expertise after they have completed their own backpacking trip.
Cultivating Connection: Building a Sense of Place
For students transitioning to Eagle Rock's campus, outdoor education offers more than just physical activities—it provides an opportunity to cultivate a sense of place and home in Colorado. By immersing themselves in the natural beauty of the state through a variety of outdoor recreation opportunities, even opportunities that can be uncomfortable or challenging, these opportunities often lead to growth and allow them to expand their understanding of nature and exploration.
Moreover, our outdoor education program is committed to promoting inclusivity and diversity in outdoor spaces. Jordan and Fox actively examine historical narratives and systemic barriers that have limited access to outdoor recreation opportunities for marginalized communities. By elevating diverse narratives and experiences, Eagle Rock aims to create a more inclusive outdoor environment where all students feel empowered to explore and connect with nature.
Embracing Growth: Encouraging Exploration and Resilience
As Eagle Rock continues to evolve its outdoor education program, Jordan encourages students of all skill levels to participate and explore the outdoors. With a supportive and inclusive environment, they are given the space to fail, learn, and grow. Whether they are seasoned adventurers or new to outdoor activities, students are welcomed with open arms and encouraged to embrace new experiences.
Looking ahead, Eagle Rock is committed to expanding its outdoor education offerings to welcome students of different abilities. From river experiences to alternative outdoor activities, we seek to ensure that all students have the opportunity to connect with nature and discover the joy of outdoor exploration.
Eagle Rock's outdoor education program embodies our commitment to experiential learning, inclusivity, and personal growth. By providing students with transformative outdoor experiences, we aim to inspire their growth as resilient, curious, and empowered individuals prepared to tackle the challenges of the world.
