Inspiring Student Growth Through Independent Study at Eagle Rock School

Inspiring Student Growth Through Independent Study at Eagle Rock School

Education is most powerful when it is personal, meaningful, and driven by curiosity. At Eagle Rock School (ERS), we believe in providing students with the tools to take ownership of their learning, and our Independent Study opportunity is one of the most dynamic ways to do just that. By engaging in self-directed exploration, students design personalized learning experiences tailored to their interests, academic needs, and future aspirations—all while building essential skills for lifelong learning.

If you're looking for an educational experience that fosters deep learning, critical thinking, and self-motivation, an independent study course at ERS may be the perfect fit.

A Unique Approach to Independent Study

Unlike traditional classroom settings where curriculum is set by instructors, Eagle Rock’s Independent Study puts students in the driver’s seat. Under the guidance of an instructor and an advisor, students propose an idea they are passionate about and collaborate on structuring a meaningful, in-depth learning experience. Every independent study project is grounded in at least one of Eagle Rock’s Five Expectations:

  1. Developing and expanding a knowledge base
  2. Communicating effectively
  3. Creating and making healthy life choices
  4. Participating as an engaged global citizen
  5. Providing leadership for justice

This structure ensures that independent study is both rigorous and relevant. Students identify big ideas, develop enduring understandings, and set learning targets that guide their exploration. Whether diving into human anatomy, researching propaganda, or exploring journaling for mental well-being, students take an active role in shaping their education.

The Independent Study opportunity allows students to fully immerse themselves in topics they are passionate about. By engaging in personalized, in-depth exploration, students can investigate niche subjects that align with their curiosity and academic goals.

Student Experience: Growth Through Self-Directed Learning

The Independent Study Program is about more than just academics—it’s an exercise in personal growth. Because students must plan and structure their coursework, they develop executive functioning skills like time management, organization, and self-discipline.

Students describe the experience as both challenging and transformative. Senaida (ERS Grad ER93) pursued an independent study on journaling and mental health. She shared:

"At the time, I was upset that it showed me some of my weak points for independent work. But later, I realized that this was really helpful as it allowed me to see specific ways in which I needed to grow. It was a valuable way to learn about myself in ways I wasn’t expecting."

Another student, Thomas (ERS Prospective Grad ER96), focused on academic reading, research, and writing with an emphasis on propaganda. For him, independent study was an opportunity to bridge personal interest with academic rigor:

"I wanted to grow in my content knowledge and skills. Plus, I knew it would help me succeed in my life after ERS. I think students can use independent studies to explore things that aren’t offered in typical ERS classes and practice self-directed learning."

By taking charge of their education, students not only refine their academic skills but also build confidence, adaptability, and a deeper understanding of how they learn best.

Academic and Personal Development Outcomes

The impact of independent study at ERS goes far beyond the completion of a project—it shapes students into lifelong learners prepared for college, careers, and personal endeavors. Because students design their own curriculum, they develop a sense of ownership and agency over their education, which translates to greater success in postsecondary learning and beyond.

For students considering rigorous college programs, independent study provides essential preparation. By engaging in research and writing-heavy projects, students immerse themselves in dense, complex material, refining their critical thinking and analytical skills—key assets for higher education and beyond.

Additionally, independent study can be a pathway to specialized certifications and career-oriented skills. For example, one ERS student pursued an independent study in personal training, splitting their time between training themselves, developing fitness plans for others, and collecting data for refinement. This hands-on approach gave them not only academic credit but also real-world experience that translated into tangible career opportunities.
