Learning That Goes Beyond the Classroom: Real World Learning at Eagle Rock School

Learning That Goes Beyond the Classroom: Real World Learning at Eagle Rock School

At Eagle Rock School, we believe learning doesn’t stop when you leave the classroom – it expands. That’s the heart of Real World Learning (RWL): an opportunity for students to step into meaningful, credit-bearing experiences that help them develop real-world skills, explore personal passions, and move closer to their long-term goals.

What Is Real World Learning?

Real World Learning transforms the way students experience their education – it’s a mindset shift of what learning can and does look like. During the summer trimester, our students begin with several weeks of on-campus academic classes. But by July, they’re off campus, diving into internships, certifications, jobs, outdoor leadership expeditions, and more.

They truly are as varied and creative as our students.

We support students every step of the way. Each young person has an ERS staff member as a point person, checking in weekly to help troubleshoot challenges, refine learning goals, and coach them through growth and reflection. Throughout the month, students gather evidence of their learning – documenting skills like diligence, communication, and adaptability – and return in the fall to present what they’ve learned during their Real World Learning Exhibition.

This isn’t school as usual. This is real life, real growth, and real change.

What’s Happening This Summer?

This summer, our students are out in the world doing what they do best: honing skills, making connections, and discovering more about who they are and what they want.

Some, like Adam in Los Angeles, are focused on professional goals. Adam wants to become a licensed barber, so we helped him get the supplies he needed. Now he’s offering free haircuts in his garage and planning to bring his setup into public spaces to make haircuts more accessible in his community. His RWL is hands-on, heart-forward, and directly tied to his dream.

Others, like Ny in the Greater Boston area, are pursuing educational goals. She’s taking a CPR and First Aid certification course, laying the foundation for future opportunities in healthcare or public service. Students like Ny are engaging with asynchronous online classes too, improving math skills, preparing for the SATs, or exploring interests like drawing and coding.

We also have students immersed in experiential learning, like those on National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) expeditions. From sea kayaking in Alaska to rock climbing in Wyoming, these outdoor leadership programs push students beyond their comfort zones and deepen their connection with nature and themselves.

Some students are spending the summer mentoring youth, working in summer camps, or navigating the fast-paced world of restaurant jobs. One student is combining their love of fitness and media by filming themselves climbing at a local gym; another is taking boxing courses.

And let’s not forget the everyday, but deeply impactful experiences: taking Driver’s Ed, applying for their first job, or learning how to write a resume. These might not make flashy headlines, but they’re just as crucial. They’re the building blocks of self-sufficiency and confidence.

It’s not always easy. Going home from Eagle Rock can be hard. Reentering home after being away at Eagle Rock is a transition. Job markets can be discouraging, and learning to apply, interview, and persist through rejection can feel overwhelming. But here’s the truth: we don’t expect students to do it alone. Through coaching, connection, and care, we’re helping them navigate these challenges with resilience and reflection.

Why It Matters

We often say that our students come to Eagle Rock because they’re ready for something different. Many are looking to step away from environments that haven’t served them, and RWL gives them the chance to move toward what does.

What makes Real World Learning so powerful is how deeply personal it becomes. It's not just about getting credit; students are claiming their future. These young adults walk away with tangible skills, valuable experiences, and a clearer sense of what they want (and don’t want) from life. They begin to view their hometowns not just as places they left, but as places they can shape and contribute to.

More than anything, RWL shifts the way students see learning. It reminds them that learning isn’t confined to our mountain campus. It can happen in a barbershop, a kayak, a fast food kitchen, a summer camp, or a gym parking lot. It can happen in any place where they show up fully, try hard things, and reflect with intention.
